Resilience Works began operating in Sonoma County, California in August 2022. However, the seeds for our high road labor brokerage started in 2005 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
After the storm, hundreds of workers -- many of whom were undocumented -- performed backbreaking work like blue roof tarping, mucking and gutting flooding homes, debris removal and general construction and were often taken advantage of. The countless instances of wage theft and unsafe working conditions led to the creation of Resilience Force, a nonprofit, to advocate on behalf of vulnerable workers during disasters. For the past 15 years, Resilience Force confronted contractors who don’t pay workers promised wages and even filed lawsuits on workers’ behalf against major conglomerates.
Two years ago, we decided that instead of trying to make companies do the right thing, we would start a company ourselves and do the right thing. Fighting the bad was no longer the only option; we needed to simultaneously build the good, which is why Resilience Works, a mission-driven for-profit company, was created.
We also realized that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters around the globe. Heat waves, rain events, hurricanes and never-ending fires threaten lives, livelihoods and property on a regular basis. Addressing climate change will require an army of workers who not only rebuild homes, businesses and government buildings after disaster, but also prepare those same buildings to better withstand future climate events before they occur. We want to build the workforce to prepare for and respond to climate change.
